Introduction to the module     This module explores the key issues and challenges in contemporary marketing communications. It will cover strategic issues of brand strategy & planning, as well as the tactical considerations needed to execute relevant and appropriate marketing communications campaigns that meet the needs of key identified audiences.     The module focuses upon the need to develop resonant, effective marketing communications targeted to key audiences for a clear and distinctive purpose. The significance of buying behaviour and the development of brand and brand strategy are analysed alongside an examination of the communications process. The significance of communications strategies toward a relationship marketing perspective is developed.     The elements comprising the promotional and advertising mix (direct marketing, sales promotion, publicity and PR etc.) are analysed alongside the development of an understanding of the creative process. Face to face communication techniques are discussed alongside the requirement to affect opinion leadership in public affairs. E-based interactive marketing techniques are explored and contrasted with traditional channel alternatives.     The key components of the marketing communications plan are identified together with implementation and measurement analysis. The importance of customer survey and feedback tools is discussed, and their impact on strategy and product development is evaluated. The drivers toward the integrated marketing communications concept are identified and its significance to different types of organisation clarified.     The module will include a mix of tutor input, case studies, group work, class discussion & independent reading. The style will be interactive and there will be an emphasis on application and critical interpretation.     This is a 15 unit module of the degree programme with five face-to-face teaching weeks followed by online engagement on Minerva over the summer. Teaching sessions will last for three hours giving a total of 15 hours direct contact time, with additional hours individual tutoring with your tutor if required. In addition there will be a number of activities on Minerva over the summer that you need to complete as a requirement of the module.     Students should allow up to 135 hours of independent self-managed learning to support the completion of all of the elements of the module.     You will be expected, through your self directed learning, to develop your own repository of academic and practitioner related sources and references to support the development of your thinking around the key concepts introduced in the module. Guidance will be given in personal tutorial. You should aim to blend a mix of readings and references between general theoretical and practitioner approaches and those more applicable to your own professional situation and self-development needs     3. Employability skills     This module is designed to enable participants to analyse, contextualise, and apply the marketing communications principals underpinning general management across all industry sectors. It will prepare you for the practical management based skills and techniques that are directly applicable to managing efficiently and effectively across a wide range of occupational contexts. It requires participants to reflect upon their own management style and skills and to apply these in different practical management scenarios.     4. Minerva     All teaching materials will be available on Minerva. In addition, any information or announcements related to the module will be posted on Minerva.     You will also need to post contributions to Minerva throughout the module, including over the extended summer period. In addition, you will need to use Minerva to post your assignments to Turnitin.
